From The Pile: Marvels

Marvels, the great heroes of the marvel universe, we known and loved them from many years, but what about those without powers, you everyday person who lives in this world, and gets saved by these heroes? Well Marvels by the well-known team of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross follows Phil Sheldon, a reporter as he lives though the many events that happened in the marvel universe. The battle with Namor and the original human torch (did you know that there was two human torches? I did, they even have a great origin story for him.), the rise of the mutants, the arrival of the silver suffer and Galactus, and the death of Gwen Stacy. Reading Marvel reminded me of reading the astro city books, also written by Busiek (with covers done by Ross). This was a great take on the marvel universe, seeing it through the eyes of someone living in it when all hell breaks loose is interesting, never lost any interest in the story. As for the art, I like Alex Ross’s covers, but never quite got into his art beyond that. Marvel is a great take on the marvel universe and is a must read for any Marvel Fan.

  

From The Pile, Floppy Edition X 3: The Flash #11, Fear Itself Spider-Man #1, & Deadpool Annual #1

Let's get started with Flash #11 

The Flash #11 by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins

Won't say much about flash #11, not because it was bad, I just don't like jump into the middle of a story, special this one which seems great, which is has to be because it's setting up Flashpoint. You gotta admit, with one of the flashes appearing to die again and the return of a flash villain, is kinda cool. I would check this book out if you're interested in flashpoint. On to the next book....

Fear Itself Spider-Man #1 by Chris Yost, Mike McKone, and Jeromy Cox

I was originally planing on trade waiting Fear Itself and it's accompanying story-lines , but decided to see who spidey is dealing with this latest Marvel Crisis. I like the views on three different peoples effects on whats happening in the Marvel world (I think sin red skull and the Asgard god of fear are cooking up something). It shows the s many hours after “The Fear” what they are doing. Spidey even saves one, something I think we will see in the other 2 books. How's spidey handling it? Great...for him. After trying to call aunt may, he punches and breaks a brick chimney. At the end, he runs into Vermin, and after being the Kraven's pet rat, I bet he's pissed. I like Fear Itself Spider-Man and may get the other 2 books in the series. Now on to the last book....

Deadpool Annual #1, Part 2 of Identity Wars (see review of part one here) By John Layman, Juan Doe, and Fabio D'Aurio

In DeadPool's visit to this other world, where spider-man is a batman ripoff, He meets his doppelganger, DeathWish, and they his it off. They have a gay old time( no that kind of gay), until he finds out the DeathWish doesn't have a healing factor the hard way. DeathWish gets killed by DeathMask, the Doctor Doom Of this world. What does DeadPool do next, what he does best, killing. I like this story, much better than the spider-Man story. We also get a look at what the hulk of this world looks like at the end. I may get the last book of this storyline, because the deadpool arc has pulled me in more

      

From The Pile floppy edition: Amazing Spider-man Annual #38 Identity wars part 1

What if Spider-Man was a Batman rip off? Well is ASM annual #38 he is, well a spidey in a parallel universe is. Spider-Man, Deadpool, and the Hulk (insert walking into a bar joke here) all get transported to another world, where peter parker is rich, and is the amazing spider, deadpool is deathwish, and you don't see the hulk's "other".

So, How much of a rip of Batman The Amazing Spider is? He's rich, has a tech company, and oh HAS A CAVE WITH A BATMOBILE IN IT! The writers should have known Peter better, he should have freaked out when he sees Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben Alive.This Book is continued in DeadPool annual #1 (next month) and concluded in Incredible Hulks annual #1(June). I have not decide if I'm getting them yet. ASM annual #38 is a trade wait. I've seen the "parallel world"dance many times and this one is not so great.

    

From The Pile: Wonder Woman Second Genesis

 It's a nice summer's night in Gateway City and Wonder Woman is on patrol. She's about to stop a fight between a gang a the police, what she discovers there is just the start of a great tale.  Wonder Woman Second Genesis by John Byrne is a great book and the best wonder woman that I've read (which including this would be two so far).

    It begins with Diana noticing the weapons the gang has is too advance for them. Along with a cop, the good to a bar and a fight breaks out, after the discover a hidden room and find out who is the weapons suppler.... DARKSIED! After getting captured, then escaping they find themselves out of this world on Apokolkips. A talk with Metrocon, a Revelation is made, the same power that created New Geneisis and Apokolkips(note read Jack Kirby's New Gods) had gave the Greek god their power, and Darksied wants it find them and take it. He invades Paradice Island, leveling it after not finding then gods. Diana is distraught not only over the death of here sisters, but her mother has also disappeared.

Along with the Second Genesis storyline is a great second story. There is also a b-story with Morgan Le Fey that goes nowhere is this book. Second Genesis is great, but it does jumps around a bit too much. Great work by John Byne too, I recommend this book as a great read.

   

from the pile......sadly....... X-men the movie adaption comicbook

Sadly, I thought reading the x-men movie adaption comic would be possibly better than the move....... I was wrong......... horribly wrong. While it does follow the movie, it is different in many parts compare to the movie, and has more dialog than the movie, but that's due to it being a comic. Even the old x-men stories Marvel threw in to make the book bigger are less that stellar. The Wolverine story was the best of them, and the only good part of this book. If someone tells you to read this..... kick them in the balls.

   

From The Pile: Blackest Night Tales of the corps

   Blackest night was one of the darkest events in DC comics history. It was also one of the greatest. Like any other event in DC or Marvel, there's others stories going on. Tales of the corps puts together the stories of the lights corps, all in one book.

   We start with the green lanterns, Kilowog's story is first. A great story about everyone's favorite lantern. A tale of Kilowog's training. We find out the origin of the famous saying "Poozers" comes from and why he's hard on the rookies. This story is a must read, one of the best out there.The next story is about Arisa, the hot blonde GL. It's all about her family, and sadly how being a Green Lantern is passed down, also a great story.

   Now we go to the other colors starting with Red. The story is about Bleez, an angel like alien. The yellow corps invade her home and make her a slave. The yellow lantern's make her life hell, including breaking her wings. When her escape is stopped, a red ring finds her and she gets her revenge.The orange corp story is great. A god of hunger goes to planet to planet consuming everything of value. Then he goes to Larfleeze world, where the god get consumed. The yellow corps is about Mongo, well a young Mongo. Watching is father victories, idolizing him. One day a group of aliens crash land, and become Mongo's slaves. Young Mongo has his fun with them until daddy comes home, ask if there ship can be used, and kills them teaching young Mongo who's in charge.Not much to tell about the blue lantern story, was not into it that much, or even the indigo tribe, unless you speak nok, klok, and lok. The Star Sapphire story is about how Carol Ferris returns to the star sapphires, and about her past. The Black Lantern story can be passed over along with the meaning of the symbols and the black book of death. Then we go to superboy prime, for some reason they put his story here not in rise of the black lanterns.it breaks one rule of mind....... NEVER HAVE THE WRITERS, ARTIST, OR EDITORS IN COMICSBOOKS! It just takes away from the story and turns me off.

   Tales of the Crops is a great book with enough goos stories to override the bad.A good supplement to Blackest Night.

   

From The Pile: JLA Crisis of Conscience

   Identity Crisis has ended( I highly recommend that you read Identity Crisis (DC Comics) before this, a must read trust me). Green Arrow, Hawkman and the others involved with the mind wiping of Criminals and Batman now must suffer. Will the JLA make it though this crisis like the have so many many many many many many times before? Crisis of Conscience is a great story, a fitting aftermath to Identity Crisis, filled with emotion, pissed off villains, pissed off and sad Batman( he punches Hawkman, the only man other than possibly superman or wildcat that could get away with it), and a few shocking surprises thrown in. It made me want to find the next JLA book after this. Yes, it is a countdown book, NO DON'T GO AWAY! it's actually pretty good. The best out of the 2 that I've read so far. The book suffers from "You gotta read these books before you read this one" syndrome.Green Lantern: Rebirth ,Superman/Batman, Vol. 2: Supergirl, and a batman book I can't remember are some that you may have to rad to understand some of the stuff happening in the book. I recommend this book as a great follow up to Identity crisis, and a good read overall.

  

From The Pile: Batman Life After Death

While Bruce is playing Doctor Who, Dick is handling the reigns as Batman. Dick is doing a great job so far from what I've read of the Dick Grayson era of Batman. Can he keep up the job? Lets see if he can in Life After Death.

There's a new black mask in Gotham (I didn't even know that the original black mask had died, but now I know how he died and who killed him). and he's causing a war between the criminals of Gotham, then again, they are always at war. There is always a crime war in Gotham. Even worse, the Falcone family has return to town and trying to make a comeback (The Faclone's are from the Loeb batman books Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory both must reads along with Batman: Haunted Knight)There also the return of the Reaper (also must read Batman: Year Two: Fear The Reaper) , and appearances by the riddler, a naked penguin (yuck), the huntress, and catwoman. Catwoman even picks up her own version of Robin with Catgirl. Good Batman story is always a good mystery story, it was a good ride finding out who the Black Mask really was. Tony Daniel does a great job writing and drawing in the book, something you don't see much in comicbooks today. Batman Life After Death is a must read for any batfan.

  

From the pile: Superman Earth One

 Well it looks like another Superman Origin story, something DC likes to do what seems every year. What makes J.Michael Straczyski's origin story so different? Well a few things, yea a young 20 Clark Kent has been done, young Louis and Jimmy been done too. One thing different is that Clark trys out many jobs before going to the daily planet, and is good at every signal one. The villain in the story in not Luthor, a change from other origin stories, matter of fact, there is no Luthor at all. JMS even change the way Krypton is destroyed, having it blown up to stop a war. I know the hardcore superman fans are pissed at JMS for that (join the club, many spidey fans are still pissed at JMS for OMD). Overall the book is so so, wroth checking out for casual fans.

  

From the pile: Superman Speeding Bullets

   What if superman fell to earth, and was discovered by the Waynes? Would he become Batman? Superman Speeding Bullets has the answers.A very great look if Bruce Wayne was really Kal-el. His life is pretty much the same, except he gets shot by Joe Chill, then Bruce kills Joe with a burst of heat vision (it was an accident). Lois Lane is in here, and yes, they hook up. Both Luthor and The Joker are here as well, they're the same person. Seeing a fat Luthor/Joker seems wrong to me. The one problem I have with the book that's too short, I would have loved to see more charcter and what their lives are in this world. I recommend this book, a great read and alternative take on superman and batman.

From the pile: Spider-Man Grim Hunt

   The Gauntlet has ended, now it's time for the Kraven's hunt, but why do they want to hunt your friendly neighborhood spider-man? Grim Hunt is a great story, brining out characters we have not seen for awhile. Arachane, a spider-girl I never hear of, madam web, and Kain 1 of spidey's clones. All the hunting of spiders leads up to two things, The return of Kraven the Hunter, and black suit spider-man, and ass we all know...

Black Suit Spider-man = badass

There's "deaths" in this book, I won't say who, but you know comicbooks, they are never truly dead. Also a berths, a new spider-girl, and a new possible foe.Grim Hunt is a must read for any comicbook fan.

From the pile: Superman Red Son

What if superman landed in soviet Russia? What if Lex Luthor and Louis Lane was married? What if Batman was a terrorist? All these and more can be found in Superman Red Son, a"what if" tale of soviet Superman and what the world would be like. 

A great story, I never got lost or bored with it. Seeing what the major players in the DCU would be like if superman's ship landed in the Soviet Union was very interesting. a unchecked Luthor taking over the world (except Russia) was disturbing, yet very interesting as well. Also seeing Wonder Woman, Batman, Lois Luthor (yea that's right....LUTHOR!) and the Green Lantern corps is like if a soviet superman was all in this alternative universe was great to see. The ending was a little confusing, does Earth become a Luthor controlled Krypton, or it was all along an alternative Krypton? Most people put off these "what if" books like the elseworlds series, but I like them. I recommend Superman Red Son and the other elsewords books, all are a great read.

    

From the pile: Siege Battlefield

Siege battlefield collects the series of one-shots that happen between siege #3 and #4. Loki, spider-man (including Ms.Marvel), Captain america (or Captain Americans),young avengers, and secret warriors are the books in this collection. There is only 2 good books in my opinion, spider-man and secret warriors.  The others I just did not like of could get into the story. Spider-man had a great story involving Venom and Ms.Marvel. Venom taking over Ms.Marvel was great, and also kinds revealing. Secret warriors was good too. It deals with Aries son, dealing with his death(you remember, The sentry turned him in to hamburger meat). His son pissed at the government and takes it out on a bunch of secret service agents while visiting the president. After kicking ass, he leaves the president a note. What about the other stories? Had no idea what has going on in Loki, got bored with Capitan America, and I never liked the young avengers. I recommend that you get the one-shots of Siege: Spider-man and Siege: Secret Warriors, and just skip Siege Battlefield.

From the Pile: Thanksgiving edition special: JLA/JSA Virtue and Vice

It's Thanksgiving, the day in the year where the JLA and the JSA get together to have some turkey. What could go wrong? Well, the 7 deadly sins could come and take over the minds of 7 heroes.Also Johnny Sorrow could come back and raise hell.Not to mention, a demon could come and take over the presidents body. all this and more happens in the crossover epic JLA/JSA Virtue and Vice by David Goyer and Geff Johns, the great writing team of JSA fame.The story is great , never lost interest one bit.Plus it's always good to see the two teams joining forces outside of a big DC event. The twist do get to be too much at times, but I can live with that. Great art, done by JSA artist Carlos Paceco. So this Thanksgiving, why not read this this book, because it's the only Thanksgiving comic book story that I know of.

From the Pile: The Amazing Spider-Man The Gauntlet: The Lizard.

If you have not been following the Gauntlet storyline, you've been missing of of the best spider-man story lines in recent memory. Out of all the stories of the gauntlet, this is the best. It doesn't get boring at the end like some of the other stories in the gauntlet. The Lizard story is the best spidey story in recent memory.

"Shed" is a tale of the end of Dr.Conners,(aka the lizard) dear friend of Peter Parker and spider-man. He's working for a man(who's a dick) mostly lab work. He's trying to find a way like always to get rid if the lizard in side of him once and for all. But getting push by his boss releases the lizard, and the boss becomes lizard chow.The Lizard is more lizard like the ever before. And with the meddling of the Kravinoffs, the Lizard is here to stay.I'm Not tell how it ends, but the events will be felt in many spidey books in the future

The story is great, a well written spider-man story. Zeb Wells did a great job. As I said before, this is the best story from the Gauntlet story line. Plus, the lizard origin mini story was interesting, much better than the other gauntlet origin stories that I've read. The art  was great, the new look lizard was done well, and the scene were the lizard eats the boss, looked great. I highly recommend this book to any comic book fan, even those old spidey fans who stopped reading ASM. I can't wait to get my hands on grim hunt.
